Who We Are
About Michigan Citizens Coalition
We are ordinary Michigan residents who believe that local government works best when citizens show up, speak up, and stay informed.
Our Mission
Michigan Citizens Coalition was founded on a simple belief: the decisions that affect your daily life — your roads, your schools, your zoning, your taxes — are made at the local level, often in rooms that are technically open to the public but practically invisible to most residents.
We exist to change that. We organize residents county by county and township by township, helping people find their local meetings, understand the issues on the agenda, and make their voices heard before decisions are finalized.
We are non-partisan. We do not endorse candidates or political parties. We simply believe that an informed, engaged citizenry is the foundation of self-governance — and that citizens are the umbrella over all branches of government, not just a fourth branch alongside them.
Citizens Are the Umbrella
The People hold the power — government works beneath them.
The Constitution creates three branches — Legislative, Executive, and Judicial — but they all flow downward from one source: The People. Citizens aren't a fourth branch tucked alongside the others. We are the umbrella over all of them. The State Constitution itself only exists because the people ratified it. Every governor, every legislator, every judge derives their authority from us. When residents show up to meetings, file FOIA requests, and demand accountability, that umbrella stays open. When they don't, the branches forget who holds them up.
What We Stand For
Community First
Every decision we make is in service of the residents we organize — not political parties, not special interests, not outside agendas.
Transparency
We believe government business should be conducted in the open. We track meetings, publish agendas, and make it easy for residents to stay informed.
Accountability
Elected officials serve at the pleasure of the people. We help residents hold their representatives accountable through civic engagement, not confrontation.
Local Focus
National politics gets all the attention, but local government shapes your everyday life. We keep the focus where it matters most — your county, your township, your community.
How We Organize
Find Your County
We organize by county and township. Find your county page to see active issues, upcoming meetings, and your local Facebook group.
Join the Conversation
Connect with neighbors in your township Facebook group. Share meeting notices, ask questions, and coordinate with people who care about the same issues.
Show Up
Attend public meetings. Sign up for public comment. Write to your elected officials. The most powerful thing a citizen can do is simply show up.
Spread the Word
Invite your neighbors. The more residents who are engaged, the harder it is for important decisions to slip through without scrutiny.
